Patriots re-sign FB Glenn Gronkowski, unconfirmed if fusing with older brother Rob

The Patriots have brought back a familiar face.

The New England Patriots have re-signed FB Glenn Gronkowski to the practice squad and have released TE Kennard Backman.

Gronkowski is back on the Patriots for a 4th time and the 6’3, 235 pound rookie will likely serve as another tight end-type at practice while his older brother Rob Gronkowski undergoes back surgery. Glenn is a true fullback, but perhaps the Patriots could envision moving James Develin to linebacker and promoting Glenn to the active roster.

Backman was on his 2nd stint with the Patriots, but the 6’3, 245 pound sophomore apparently wasn’t what the Patriots needed this week. Don’t be surprised if he is brought back later in the season.

The Patriots need to find additional depth to replace Rob Gronkowski, who is expected to be out for the rest of the year. Currently the Patriots have just Martellus Bennett and Matt Lengel on the depth chart.

Little brother Glenn is an actual option, as is defensive end Geneo Grissom, who spent time as a tight end in college. Moving forward with just two tight ends is a serious concern for a team so reliant on the position.
