The Patriots have agreed to terms with former Colts and Chargers running back Donald Brown, according to several sources. Terms of the deal are as of yet unknown.
Brown, 28, was drafted 27th overall by the Indianapolis Colts after an extremely successful career at UConn (making him the first UConn player ever to be selected in the 1st round). However, he never really panned out in Indy, due to a number of factors - lack of carries, injuries, the emergence of Vick Ballard, and that godawful Suck for Luck season in which the Colts more or less tanked every game - and he ended up signing with the San Diego Chargers in March of 2014. He never quite found a way to crack the starting lineup there either, however, and the Chargers released him on the 3rd of this month.
At this point, Brown is one of the few proven large RBs on the roster and if the season began today, he may even be the Day 1 starter. However, it's likely that Brown was brought in to compete for a roster spot in training camp and there will be other running backs brought in between now and September. Brown is one of those players who never really got a true fair shake in the NFL, and under the right system, he could be a highly serviceable back. Or, he could be cut before the season even starts and never even get the opportunity to prove that he can compete at a high level.
I'm just happy to have a Husky on the roster.
