Who Needs Outside Receivers? Patriots Expected to Tender WR Josh Boyce

This is certainly interesting.

The Providence Journal's Mark Daniels reports that wide receiver Josh Boyce "is still in the Patriots plans. Expect him to be tendered an offer. The wide receiver needs to stay healthy."

This means that Boyce, who was an exclusive rights free agent, will get another training camp shot at making the squad.

Boyce's athleticism has never been in question as the 5'11, 206 lbs receiver dropped a 4.38 40 yard dash at the NFL combine, posted a ridiculous 6.68 three cone, 10'11 broad jump, and 22 reps on the bench press. His issue is that he never put it all together on the football field.

The Patriots have a logjam at the movable "Z" receiver role, with Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Keshawn Martin, and Chris Harper all finishing the season on the active roster. Boyce will have an uphill battle to overtake them to make the roster.

Boyce seems to understand the routes and he flashes yards-after-the-catch ability, but he consistently struggled to finish catches with defensive backs breathing down his neck.

Look for Boyce to function as a camp body.
