The New England Patriots have made Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell the 112th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.
I'm thrilled, as a start.
Mitchell was the 2nd highest rated wide receiver left on my board and he's going to fit nicely with the Patriots. He runs Pro Style routes and has some of the best hands in the draft. He uses subtle movements to generate separation and plays bigger than his 5'11 5/8 frame would suggest (he has the wing span of someone 6'3). He's played some pretty shaky quarterback performances, so he'll be happy to line up with Tom Brady.
Mitchell runs a 4.45 40 yard dash, owns an awesome 36 inch vertical and an explosive 10'9 broad jump. He even adds a 6.94 three cone. He's dangerous after the catch and he can play inside and out (although he's predominantly an outside receiver).
Mitchell suffered a torn ACL in 2012 and finally seemed to catch his stride this past year, grabbing roughly 36% of Georgia's entire passing attack. He has the ability to put an offense on his back, and he'll fit in well as a complementary piece in the Patriots offense.
Mitchell will likely compete with Chris Hogan and Nate Washington as outside receivers vying to replace Brandon LaFell.
The Patriots have effectively traded one year of Chandler Jones for guard Jonathan Cooper, four years of Joe Thuney, and four years of Malcolm Mitchell. Hopefully it will pay off.
Oh, and there's nothing wrong with adding another Malco(l)m to the mix, either.
