He holds every important Houston Texans rushing record. He has scored 74 touchdowns in his seven-year career. He is a dual-threat and only 29 years old. And, he is an unrestricted free agent. However, two-and-a-half months after getting released by his former team, Arian Foster has still not found a new home.
Judging by his past success he looks like a prospect worth pursuing; maybe even from the New England Patriots' perspective.
After all, the Patriots' ground game struggled mightily in 2015. Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount both ended the year on injured reserve, while their backups were unable to step up. Adding a veteran of Foster's caliber might help take some pressure off the rehabbing Lewis and Blount, while also adding competition to the players behind them on the depth chart.
Another positive aspect is the fact that Foster has played his last two seasons under former New England offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien. While Josh McDaniels' offense is slightly different, the terminology and general concepts are the same, so Foster should not have too hard of a time adjusting.
However, the 29-year old Foster himself is also coming off a serious injury: his 2015 season ended because of a torn Achilles tendon. In general, his health is a concern as he has appeared in only 80 of a possible 117 games (68.4%) over the course of his career. Both his 2015 and his 2013 seasons ended on injured reserve.
Still, Foster is an intriguing – and likely cheap – option, whose talent and potential to succeed in the Patriots' offense cannot be denied.
