In January, after the New England Patriots' 2015 season ended, so did Dr. Matt Provencher's tenure as the team's medical director: he left his positions with the Patriots and as Massachusetts General Hospital's Chief of Sports Medicine to take on a job at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado.
Until now, neither organization has officially announced Dr. Provencher's replacement. However, according to Tom E. Curran, one has already been found (at least for the Patriots):
The Patriots' haven't officially announced a new medical director for 2016, but a source indicates that when they do make the announcement, it's expected to be Dr. Mark D. Price.
Dr. Price, whose biography at massgeneral.org confirms his new gig with the Patriots, specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. After earning his MD at Harvard Medical School, he did residency training in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program and completed a fellowship in sports medicine and reconstructive shoulder surgery at Mass General.
Afterwards, Dr. Price studied throwing injuries alongside Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama, and Dr. David Altchek in New York. Before joining Massachusetts General as an attending orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Price also worked at the UMass Medical School and at the UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Furthermore, Dr. Price is a team physician for the Boston Red Sox and orthopedic consultant for the Boston Bruins. He also is a Commander in the United States Navy Reserves, having served in combat operations in Afghanistan.
Historically, the Patriots' medical director is also simultaneously Massachusetts General Hospital's Chief of Sports Medicine. It remains to be seen, whether Dr. Price's role within the hospital also changes.
