Patriots RB D.J. Foster, DE Geneo Grissom headline season-long Practice Player of the Week review

Foster won the most awards over the course of the season, but Grissom was close behind.

The New England Patriots have announced their practice players of the week from the season finale against the Miami Dolphins, which means that we can present the season-long tally of award winners.

Winners are usually players that step up on the scout team, although some are players that applied what they learned in practice to the actual game and others are those that were particularly focused during the week.

RB D.J. Foster cleaned up with nine awards out of a possible 14 (the Patriots don’t present the award if the team loses), including six in the final seven weeks. Foster effectively received a red shirt year and should come back in 2017 as a major competitor to not just make the active roster, but actively contribute.

ED Geneo Grissom won seven awards, with five in the final seven weeks. Grissom’s versatility as both a defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, and even a tight end makes him a great scout team athlete, but the former 3rd round pick will need to show more as a defender than just special teams ability if he’s going to make the active roster.

WR DeAndrew White won five awards, including three straight from week 6 to 8. White was a versatile receiver that acted as the top option of most of the opposing teams.

DB Brandon King and DB Jordan Richards both won four awards apiece, as did TE Matt Lengel. LB Trevor Reilly, FB Glenn Gronkowski, OG Ted Karras, and OT LaAdrian Waddle won three awards. No other player won more than two.

There were a few notable awards over the course of the year. DT Malcom Brown won twice, including this past week after serving time in Bill Belichick’s dog house. LB Elandon Roberts and QB Jacoby Brissett both won two awards and they both came against the Dolphins in week 2 and week 17. QB Jimmy Garoppolo won in week 12 as the scout team version of Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Below is the full table of winners. It doesn’t come across well on mobile, but should be fine on tablets and desktops.
