The New England Patriots played a close and hard-fought game against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers. And while the team made its fair share of mistakes, it was still able to win 21-13 and thus heads into its bye week with a 6-2 record. That being out of the way, let's take a look at this week's game ball candidates – three players who stood out positively during an at times sloppy game:
Candidate: CB Jonathan Jones
New England missed both Stephon Gilmore and Eric Rowe once again, which resulted in Jonathan Jones again seeing increased defensive playing time. The 24-year old was solid and registered a both pass breakup on a third down as well as the game-winning interception. Jones also stood out on special teams and was a key part of forcing Chargers punt returner Travis Benjamin into his second quarter safety.
Candidate: LB Elandon Roberts
After missing the Patriots' game against the Atlanta Falcons, Elandon Roberts was back on the field this week – and he played a big role in the team's quest to replace the injured Dont'a Hightower. Roberts was active all contest long and finished tied for the team lead with six tackles. He also saw plenty of action as a blitzer against the run and the pass. The 23-year old had a good game and stepped up with Hightower out.
Candidate: OT Nate Solder
The Chargers finished with three sacks of Tom Brady and had multiple pressures. Still, it could have been worse considering how talented of a defensive front they were facing. One of the better players up front was left tackle Nate Solder, who played arguably his best game of the season and was able to keep both Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram off Brady. While he was flagged for an illegal block in the back – an iffy call –, Solder overall played a convincing game both as a pass and run blocker.
With all that in mind, who is your choice for this week's game ball?
