New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick joined Scott Zolak for this week’s Belichick Breakdown where he broke down the Denver Broncos run defense and offense and highlighted how the game in the trenches could be the deciding factor on Sunday night. You can watch the video here.
Belichick notes that the Broncos defense plays a “true 1 gap” style where every single gap on the offensive line is covered against the run and that there are plays controlling the edge and that makes it difficult to move the ball up the gut unless the blockers have an emphatic win over the defenders.
“A very, very disciplined defense,” Belichick said about the Broncos run defense. “There’s one more of them than you have.”
“They do an excellent job of creating movement into the offensive side of the ball,” he added, explaining how the Broncos re-set the line of scrimmage on defense.
Belichick also highlighted the strength of the Broncos run blocking and combo-blocks and how that often springs running back C.J. Anderson into the second level of the defense.
The Patriots game in the trenches is likely to determine the outcome on Sunday night and don’t be surprised if the Patriots try to get an early lead and just grind out the clock for the rest of the game.
