New York Jets quarterback Josh McCown was on the Cleveland Browns roster for week 5 of the 2016 season, when New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was expected to make his return from suspension. McCown was probably tasked with scouting some of the Patriots offensive trends over the first four weeks and a certain player caught his eye.
Mr. Jimmy Garoppolo.
McCown was so enamored with Garoppolo’s ability that over a year ago he told wide receiver Andrew Hawkins that Garoppolo “is going to be the next star quarterback in this league.”
.@JoshMcCown12 quote to me over a year ago....
— Andrew Hawkins (@Hawk) December 22, 2017
"If you dont trust anything from me ever again Hawk, do yourself a favor and go watch film on Jimmy Garroppolo, because that dude is gonna ba the next star QB in this league." https://t.co/Sat0g8u6ku
I wonder if that story is why Hawkins decided to sign with the Patriots for a cup of coffee this offseason.
The Patriots need Garoppolo to live up to the hype this week as the San Francisco 49ers host the Jacksonville Jaguars. A Jaguars loss and a Patriots victory would secure a first round bye for New England.
The Patriots play the Jets in week 17, but McCown is injured again.
