Earlier today, the NFL announced that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will be suspended for one game due to his late hit on Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White in Sunday's game between the two teams. After a fourth quarter interception, Gronkowski hit the rookie despite the play already being ruled dead and White suffered a concussion as a result.
Malicious intent or not, White suffering an injury gives the NFL reason to suspend the NFL's best tight end. Gronkowski will appeal the decision but there is a very real chance that he will miss New England's upcoming game versus the Miami Dolphins. Of course, even if the suspension gets overturned on the appeal, Gronkowski's behavior does not get justified – the hit was unnecessary and dirty.
But in light of how inconsistently the NFL acted on unnecessary roughness and suspensions in the past it is fair to ask whether or not suspending the 28-year old for one game is a) justified given that Gronkowski has had a spotless record since getting selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft or b) enough due to the ultimate outcome.
