The Patriots are reportedly looking at “covering their bases” and are searching for another quarterback.

On Friday, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported that the Patriots are looking to add another backup quarterback:

“The Patriots are exploring their options among backup quarterbacks who are set to become free agents, according to a source. The only logical explanation for this is they’re laying the groundwork to bring in a third quarterback in the event that they trade backup Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason.”

To most, this is just business as usual — Bill Belichick doing his due diligence. However, to some, it casts a shadow of doubt over the Patriots’ view of current third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

If Garoppolo is to be traded, the addition of another body to bring to training camp would only make sense, and would have nothing to do with the organization’s view of Brissett, who was the team’s lone selection to return from IR in 2016.

If a player is signed and becomes the fourth QB on the roster, then Brissett fans would need to worry. Until that point, this report should be taken only as routine roster building.
