Even though the New England Patriots currently have no open space on their 90-man roster, the team does not stop looking for ways to improve. Improving at this stage during the offseason means bringing unsigned or released players on board – and the Patriots have taken a look at one yesterday.
According to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, New England hosted free agent linebacker Andrew Gachkar on a visit:
Patriots hosted free-agent LB Andrew Gachkar today. Seven-year veteran has played with Chargers (2011-2014) & Cowboys (2015-2016).
The 6’2, 225 lbs linebacker originally entered the league in 2011 as a seventh round draft pick by the then-San Diego Chargers. In four seasons in the AFC West, Gachkar appeared in 63 regular season games and two playoff contests. He was mostly used as a backup linebacker, seeing the majority of his playing time on special teams.
In 2015, Gachkar joined the Dallas Cowboys on a two-year free agency contract and continued to play the role he had in San Diego: A rotational but versatile depth option at linebacker as well as a core special teamer.
Before signing with the Cowboys, for whom he appeared in 33 overall games, Gachkar received interest from the Patriots. The team offered the free agent a contract but he ultimately chose Dallas over New England to be reunited with his former special teams coach Rich Bisaccia.
Two years later, New England is once again expressing interest in the now 28-year old. Whether the result will be different this time around remains to be seen, but if signed, Gachkar would likely fight with Shea McClellin, Jonathan Freeny and undrafted rookie Harvey Langi for a maximum of two roster spots.
