Patriots 2017 training camp: 08/01 recap; WR Julian Edelman and CB Stephon Gilmore tossed from practice, injury scares for two players

New, comments

New England returned to the practice fields today.

After an off-day on Monay, the New England Patriots returned to practice today. Conditions on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium were perfect but tampers flared nevertheless: Two players, wide receiver Julian Edelman and cornerback Stephon Gilmore, were in the middle of it.

Before going into any detail, here is what happened during today's session (via our live news feed).

Attendance

The same two players who have missed the last session were absent today as well: Safety Duron Harmon and wide receiver Cody Hollister.

Wide receivers Danny Amendola and Malcolm Mitchell as well as safety David Jones were once again working separately on another field. While Amendola did a bit more today – he returned to the team at one point –, Mitchell remains in full rehab mode.

Dont'a Hightower and Alan Branch remain on the PUP list, while Andrew Jelks remains on NFI.

As mentioned above, Julian Edelman and Stephon Gilmore had a heated battle; one that culminated in a fight between the two star players after an incomplete pass. Edelman wrestled Gilmore to the ground and one thing led to another until both were tossed from the session.

Injuries

Two players suffered injuries: Linebacker Elandon Roberts walked gingerly off the field after a non-contact injury but later returned after trainers took a look at his ankle. Tight end James O'Shaughness, on the other hand, did not return after walking off the field with head athletic trainer Jim Whalen.

Offense

Per the Providence Journal's Mark Daniels, the quarterbacks performed as follows:

11-on-11s: Tom Brady 16/23; Jimmy Garoppolo 8/15, INT; Jacoby Brissett 6/11

Career special teamer Matthew Slater caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Garoppolo off a deflection by Justin Coleman.

Overall, it was not a good day for Garoppolo, though. He threw two total interceptions and had to run a penalty lap for a botched snap at one point (together with Ted Karras).

Jacoby Brissett and rookie Austin Carr connected on a deep sideline pass.

Defense

Geneo Grissom performed well in one-on-ones and at one point was even able to get left guard Joe Thuney to the ground.

Justin Coleman recorded an interception off Jimmy Garoppolo during 11-on-11s. Coleman was covering Chris Hogan but was able to pick off the bad pass. Demarius Travis also picked off Garoppolo (in the end zone).

Devin McCourty registered an interception off Jacoby Brissett during 1-on-1s.

With Hightower out, David Harris and Jonathan Freeny have seen considerable practice reps at inside linebacker.

Rookie linebacker Harvey Langi, meanwhile, has seen lots of opportunities at defensive edge but “looked a little lost at times”.

Rookie defensive edge Deatrich Wise Jr. also saw increased snaps, playing on a four-man line together with Trey Flowers as well as interior defenders Malcom Brown and Lawrence Guy.

At one point, the entire defense had to run a penalty lap.

Cyrus Jones took over for Gilmore, after the veteran got ejected from the session.

Special teams

Jonathan Jones returned kickoffs, the first time this has happened in a public practice.

As noted above, Amendola came off the rehab fields at one point. He was working on punt returns.

The Patriots will return to practice on tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. ET. Make sure to check out our training camp guide in case you want to visit the session.
