The New England Patriots decided to give new RB Rex Burkhead an opportunity to highlight his abilities in the team’s second preseason game. The Houston Texans have a strong defense and Burkhead made the most of his opportunities.
Burkhead had seven rushes for 20 yards against a strong Texans defensive front, but his most evident value came as a receiver where he collected three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown over the first 17 minutes of the game.
Burkhead looked like an agile receiver with soft hands with his #34 serving as a reminder of former Patriots RB Shane Vereen. Patriots QB Tom Brady has looked in his direction with a lot of comfort so far.
Burkhead is making the most of his opportunities while Mike Gillislee remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. Burkhead provides greater ability as both a blocker and a receiver and could be well on his way to holding down the starting job for the start of the season.
