Patriots-Lions: TE Rob Gronkowski expected to play second-straight preseason game

The Patriots tight end is seeing serious preseason work.

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski played in week 2 of the preseason against the Houston Texans, marking his first preseason appearance since week 3 of 2012. According to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe, Gronk will make an encore performance against the Detroit Lions.

“Gronk is playing again tonight,” Howe simply tweeted.

Gronkowski played 14 snaps and didn’t see a target, but he looked able as a blocker and was mostly trying to shake some of the rust off. Don’t be surprised if he fielded a target or two from QB Tom Brady as the Patriots ease Gronkowski in from his third back surgery.

The Patriots are working on integrating a handful of players into the offense that were not a part of the squad for Super Bowl LI. Gronkowski is joined by WR Brandin Cooks, RB Mike Gillislee, and TE Dwayne Allen as players expecting to see considerable time in this new offense.
