The New England Patriots released EDGE Kony Ealy, who was promptly claimed off waivers by the New York Jets, according to multiple reports. The Jets were sixth on the list, which means that the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Rams all decided not to put in a claim on Ealy.
There were “a good amount of teams” to show interest in Ealy on the waiver wire, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, so the Jets weren’t the only team to put in a claim.
The Jets edge defender depth chart is incredibly shallow with defensive tackles Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson the most likely to line up on the edge- partially due to their versatility, also due to necessity.
The Patriots face the Jets in week 6 on October 15th, so we’ll see if Ealy makes the Jets final roster and will have a chance to play the Patriots.
