EDIT: Hamilton returned to the field on the next defensive drive.
The fourth preseason game is when players are fighting for final spots on the New England Patriots' 53-man roster. One of those players is second-year defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton. The 2016 undrafted free agent has been one of the better backup defenders against the New York Giants.
It is therefore tough to see him leave the game with an injury. Midway through the second quarter, Hamilton stayed down on the ground after appearing to hurt his right knee on a running play:
Judged by the clip above it is hard to judge what happened – but the defensive tackle had to limp off the field with the help of trainers following his injury. He was unable to put any pressure on his leg.
The 24-year old leaving the contest opens the door for Josh Augusta and Darius Kilgo to get additional playing time. And while they, just like Hamilton, are long-shots to make the team, this could help them find their way onto the Patriots' practice squad once roster cuts start on Sunday.
The Patriots lost 40-38, but that was a surprisingly fun game. What'd you think?
