New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks is running circles around the Jacksonville Jaguars defense during the first joint practice of the preseason. Cooks has been catching deep passes all day and collected a one-handed grab in the end zone that made the stadium erupt.
Same play, different angle:
It might be too early to talk about the Brandin Cooks era of the Patriots, but he’s making a strong case to be the top target in the offense for the next two seasons, especially with Julian Edelman on the wrong side of 30 and Rob Gronkowski always an injury risk.
That’s not to say that Cooks will be the unquestioned number one receiver in the offense, but he’s going to take his place next to Gronkowski and Edelman to create a 1A, 1B, and 1C of sorts, with James White seeing targets out of the backfield.
This is still just practice, but Cooks has been torching a Jaguars defense that has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the top free agents over the past few offseasons. It’s a good sign of things to come.
