Despite their opening day collapse against the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots still have one of the most talented rosters in the entire NFL. Among the particularly deep positions on the team is running back: The defending world champions have four runners who have all been productive in the past.
Mike Gillislee appears to be the team's undisputed goal line back, having scored three times against the Chiefs in short-yardage situations. James White and Rex Burkhead, meanwhile, offer versatility in both the running and the passing game and have either seen considerable playing time last week (White) or are contractual key members of the offense (Burkhead).
Enter Dion Lewis. The 26-year old, who played six offensive snaps against the Chiefs and seven as a kickoff returner, offers a skillset similar to White's and Burkhead's. He is a threat out of the backfield but also able to earn yardage as a between-the-tackles runner. Given his athletic traits, he is an intriguing member of the Patriots' current roster. He is also one garnering trade interest.
As first reported by the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe, “multiple teams” have reached out to New England asking about potentially acquiring Lewis. So far, the Patriots have not “been willing to bite on these conversations”, per Howe, but a lot can change until the trade deadline on October 31 – especially if the team feels depth at another position might be more valuable than carrying a fourth pure running back.
What would you do? Trade Lewis if the right offer comes around or keep him on the team due to his undeniable set of skills?
