Cardinals sign RB D.J. Foster from the Patriots practice squad

New, comments

Foster was always destined for the NFL. It was a matter of time.

I was surprised when the Patriots were able to stash RB D.J. Foster on the practice squad during roster cuts. I’m not surprised that the Arizona Cardinals are taking advantage and signing Foster away from the Patriots, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Foster was one of the more dynamic running backs over the past two preseasons for the Patriots, but he was unable to make an impact on game day simply because of the numbers game. He was stuck behind James White and Dion Lewis on the depth chart and wasn’t going to get much of a chance to play.

I always suspected that the Patriots wanted to retain Foster and have him possibly replace either Rex Burkhead or Dion Lewis in 2018. That’s no longer an option.

The Cardinals lost RB David Johnson for an extended period of time with a dislocated wrist and they needed another do-it-all running back. Foster should make an immediate impact.

I’m also happy that the Scottsdale native and Arizona State graduate gets to play for his hometown Cardinals. Best of luck!

The Patriots now have an opening on the practice squad. I wouldn’t be surprised if they added a quarterback.
