The Kansas City Chiefs pulled away from the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter of the season opener and the Patriots lacked the necessary energy to fight back. Tom Brady was laughing after a costly penalty by the goal line, players weren’t fired up on the sideline, and defenders weren’t making enough plays to have reason to celebrate.
The Patriots and Chiefs entered the game with two opposite game plans. One team played it perfectly, while the other failed in the one way they couldn’t afford to fail.
If the New England defense prevented any of the Chiefs 50+ yard gains, or if the Patriots converted on any of their third- and fourth-and-ones, then we might be singing a different tune. Maybe the Patriots would have built up an early 28-0 lead that would have been insurmountable.
Instead, the Chiefs clawed back and the Patriots stalled and were unable to perform on either side of the football.
