Earlier today, the New England Patriots have traded third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett for Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. The move hurt the chances of the Patriots' depth wideouts – among them undrafted rookie Austin Carr. With the writing on the wall, Boston Herald beat writer Jeff Howe's tweet about his release did not come as too big a surprise:
Austin Carr was cut, per source.

Carr was a standout during training camp and his practice performances translated to the preseason games: He finished the exhibition period as the Patriots' leader in catches (14), yards (153) and receiving touchdowns (2) and displayed solid chemistry with backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
However, it was not enough to survive the numbers game at the position. Now, Carr becomes a priority practice squad signing – if he ultimately makes it through waivers.
Also according to Howe, the Patriots have released tight end James O'Shaughnessy:
James O'Shaughnessy was cut, per source.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise: Not only do the Patriots have questions behind roster locks Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen, they have also traded a fifth round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for O'Shaughnessy's services. With him now out of the picture, undrafted rookie Jacob Hollister will reportedly make the team as the third tight end.
