The New England Patriots signed former Old Dominion and Minnesota Vikings QB Taylor Heinicke to the practice squad and subsequently released WR Demarcus Ayers. Heinicke has been in the league for two seasons.
The 6’1, 210-pound Heinicke was a healthy scratch on the Vikings roster his entire rookie 2015 season and started his sophomore 2016 season on the reserves/non-football injury list before returning for the end of the year. His addition provides the Patriots with depth at an important position after trading away third-string QB Jacoby Brissett.
The Patriots signed Ayers to the practice squad on September 4th and his subsequent release is a positive sign for the health of Danny Amendola and Phillip Dorsett.
