The New England Patriots played their fourth game of the season against a team currently in the playoff picture — and for the fourth time, they came away victoriously. New England’s 24-10 win against the visiting Minnesota Vikings saw the team play arguably its best defensive football of the season and also perform very well on offense going against one of the NFL’s best defenses.
The contest saw plenty of memorable performances but we will focus on three of the most impressive at first glance in today’s game ball vote.
FB James Develin
If you had James Develin on your fantasy team... congratulations Mrs. Develin! The Patriots’ fullback once again proved why he is arguably the best player in the NFL at his position. The 30-year old saw considerable snaps as the lead blocker in the running game and helped the team rush for 160 yards. However, he also had the most active day of his career when it comes to touching the football: Develin registered four carries for 5 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding a 9-yard catch. All in all, it was a big performance.
DE Trey Flowers
Make no mistake about it, Trey Flowers is one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. Against the Vikings, he once again proved why: the 25-year old made an impact all game long and put consistent pressure on Minnesota’s offensive line — and thus contributed directly to both of the team’s sacks of quarterback Kirk Cousins. Playing on the edge and as a defensive tackle, Flowers was terrific no matter where he lined up.
CB Stephon Gilmore
The Vikings field one of the NFL’s best wide receiver duos and the Patriots were able to pretty much shut it down. While Adam Thielen finished with five catches for 28 yards and a touchdown, Stefon Diggs also caught just five balls for 49 yards — all while mostly being covered one-on-one by Stephon Gilmore. The Patriots’ best cornerback had another excellent game and firmly held his ground versus Diggs. Just like the rest of the secondary, he was outstanding considering the quality of the opposition.
With all that in mind, who is your choice for this week’s game ball?
