The New England Patriots have been relatively quiet during the legal tampering period, the rest of the AFC East not so much. Among them are the Miami Dolphins who apparently targeted a Patriots offensive weapon: wide receiver Danny Amendola.

According to NFL Network’s Dan Hellie, the Dolphins are expected to sign the unrestricted free agent:

Danny Amendola is staying in the AFC East... expected to sign with Miami Dolphins per source.

Amendola originally joined the Patriots via untestricted free agency in 2013. While he never became the successor for Wes Welker he was originally supposed to be, the former undrafted free agent earned a reputation as one of the most clutch players int he NFL and played a key role in two of New England’s Super Bowl victories.

With Amendola headed towards Miami, the Patriots will head into free agency with Julian Edelman, Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan as the top three options at wide receiver. Phillip Dorsett, Kenny Britt and Malcolm Mitchell will serve as the depth players as things stand right now.

[UPDATE 03/13, 3:16 pm ET] According to NFL Network's Peter Schrager, the Dolphins are paying Amendola $12 million on a two-year contract that includes $8.25 million in guarantees.
