The New England Patriots' offseason has no shortage of storylines. From speculation about cornerback Malcolm Butler's benching during the Super Bowl, to the retirement rumors surrounding tight end Rob Gronkowski to multiple starters leaving the team via free agency. Safe to say, there was no need for additional stories. Alas, this is not the case as a recent report by Costa Rican newspaper El Nación shows.
According to the article, Patriots safety Duron Harmon was detained for marijuana possession yesterday. The 27-year old was taken into custody at Juan Santamaría International Airport in the nation's capital of San José after trying to enter the country with a total of 58 grams of marijuana in his luggage. Harmon, as the report further states, was flying in from Fort Lauderdale and ultimately expelled from the country following the incident.
Any potential disciplinary consequences from both a team and league standpoint have yet to be reported. If Harmon – who previously had a clean record – ultimately were suspended by the NFL, New England's defense would lose one of its most important defenders. The veteran safety missed only one game over the course of his five-year career and established himself as a consistent presence and playmaker in the Patriots' secondary.
[UPDATE, 03/24, 9:45 pm ET] An earlier version of this story erroneously referred to Harmon being arrested. However, as patsfans.com's Steve Balestrieri pointed out, the defensive back was simply detained.
