No matter how old you are, that first real paycheck when you’re fresh out of college is for sure one of the sweetest. It’s that perfect rush of “Yeah, I earned that” and if you’re lucky, a healthy side of “Now we’re cooking with gas”.
New England’s two first-round picks in this year’s draft haven’t signed their rookie contracts yet (not to worry, it’s relatively common for highly drafted players to take a bit longer to cross the T’s and dot the lowercase j’s, especially if you play for the Chargers), but ESPN caught up with at least one of every team’s picks and asked them about their plans for that first big direct deposit that’ll hit their bank account soon enough. And former roommates Sony Michel and Isaiah Wynn, as one might expect from a pair of college team captains, both decided to play it safe and hopefully not end up in a sequel to “Broke”.
Isaiah Wynn:
“I’m definitely going to send my mom on vacation for at least a week and stack the rest.”
Hey, Mother’s Day was this past weekend, right? Gotta feel great to be able to send something besides a card and flowers. Smart man.
Sony Michel:
“I’m going to put it in the bank.”
Also smart.
And here’s a wild number for you: with Georgia fresh off their national championship heartbreaker against Alabama and boasting three first-round picks in the 2018 draft, UGA’s trio of Roquan Smith, Isaiah Wynn, and Sony Michel are expected to earn almost $40 million between the three of them on their respective rookie deals.
(H/T to Dawgs 24/7 for that one)
As our man Bernd covered over the weekend, even though Michel & Wynn (and second-round defensive back Duke Dawson) haven’t signed yet, they can still participate in offseason workouts. The big deadline for those three is training camp, which means they’ve still got until the end of July to get all that figured out. And for what it’s worth, the last time the Patriots signed a first-round pick, Malcom Brown was signed by June 19th.
So by the time you’re planning your 4th of July party, those three all should be done deals.
