The New England Patriots added fullback Henry Poggi to the roster, per NESN’s Doug Kyed. Poggi is a 6’2, 245 pound fullback out of the University of Michigan where he played just 14 games over four seasons. He’s a converted defensive end, just like the Patriots current fullback James Develin.
Poggi signed with the Oakland Raiders after the draft, but was released in June. His scouting report calls him a good blocker, but not much else. He seems to be a camp body and possible placeholder as the Patriots work through injuries at wide receiver, but he’ll get a chance to prove his value.
In a corresponding move, the Patriots released Jordan Matthews, who suffered a hamstring injury. Alec wrote about the transaction here. Matthews is likely to end up on the Patriots injured reserve list, but could sign an injury settlement if he heals in short time.
