The New England Patriots were back on the practice fields again today for their 13th overall session of this year’s training camp. The practice – a recurring theme for the team this summer – was again held in less then ideal conditions.
Let’s recap what happened:
Attendance
WR Matthew Slater, RB Sony Michel, RB Rex Burkhead, OT Marcus Cannon, and LB Harvey Langi were absent. (source) Slater is a new addition to the list after being limited yesterday.
WR Kenny Britt, WR Cordarrelle Patterson, OG Jason King, DE Trey Flowers, CB Duke Dawson, and CB Ryan Lewis were all limited participants. (source) Patterson and Dawson are first-timers in the limited column after being full participants during all previous practices.
Injuries
Julian Edelman appeared to favor his surgically repaired right knee after getting tangled up with Eric Rowe. (source)
Jeremy Hill left the field clutching the back of his right leg after his lone carry of the day. He did not leave practice, though, and instead spent the rest of the session on the sidelines. (source)
Offense
The quarterbacks performed as follows during 11-on-11 work: (source)
Tom Brady: 15/28, INT
Brian Hoyer: 12/19, INT
Danny Etling: 4/4
New England’s passing offense had its worst session of this year’s camp, with drops and miscommunication the theme of the day. (source)
The following players had at least one drop: Eric Decker (3), Devin Lucien (2), Rob Gronkowski, Chris Hogan, James White, Will Tye, Paul Turner. (source)
After one incompletion, Brady punted the football into the crowd in frustration. (source)
Newly acquired Eric Decker continues to be inconsistent: He added more drops today but also caught a deep pass from Brady over cornerback Jonathan Jones. (source)
While first-round rookie Isaiah Wynn again saw considerable reps at right tackle and started the 11-on-11 period, LaAdrian Waddle saw more action as the top option with Marcus Cannon still out. (source)
Julian Edelman had his most active day of camp so far, seeing plenty of action on offense and special teams. (source)
Brady ran the scout team late during practice (source) and had a side session with Rob Gronkowski, Eric Decker, and Phillip Dorsett. (source) After practice, he worked on evading pass rushers. (source)
Defense
Jason McCourty saw reps over Eric Rowe today as the number two corner opposite Stephon Gilmore, with Jonathan Jones back in the slot. (source)
Gilmore had an interception off Brian Hoyer after Riley McCarron ran the wrong route. (source)
Rookie J.C. Jackson registered an interception off Tom Brady on a deep pass intended for Phillip Dorsett. Brady threw into triple coverage and Dorsett failed to make a play on the football, allowing for an easy pick. (source)
Jackson also registered two pass breakups and continues to push for a roster spot. (source)
Cyrus Jones saw more reps in 11-on-11 situations today. (source)
Ja’Whaun Bentley again saw reps with the starting defense. (source)
Special teams
Tom Brady worked on his punting skills today. (source)
Miscellaneous
The entire Dean College football team was present for the session. Dean, of course, has former Patriot Sammy Morris on board as its running backs coach. (source)
Tom Brady was again wearing a new helmet model. (source)
Players gathered after the session to sing happy birthday to the McCourty twins, who turn 31 today. (source)
