The fourth week of the preseason usually is reserved for backups and depth players fighting for spots on rosters and practice squads. Every now and then, this leads to spectacular results. Enter New England Patriots third-string quarterback Danny Etling. The rookie is far from a lock to make the team but he just made one of the most spectacular preseason plays in recent memory.
Enjoy Danny Etling scoring on an 86-yard touchdown run:
Wait, what?!

Etling, who was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round this year, was having an up and down game up to that point. Displaying plenty of inaccuracy and at times questionable decision making, he showed why he was on the roster bubble. That being said, the team’s offensive staff – with wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea serving as the signal caller tonight – decided to let him enter the spotlight on the play above.
A great decision.
