Notes, musings, and observations from the Patriots’ tenth training camp practice.

NFL: New England Patriots-OTA Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports

After enjoying two days off, the New England Patriots were back on the field for another day of work. The session was arguably the hottest of the year and the intensity, competitiveness and workload for some players were impacted as temperatures climbed into the 90s.

Let’s recap what happened today:

Attendance

RB Sony Michel, OT Marcus Cannon, OG Jason King, and LB Harvey Langi were not present. (source) Langi is a new addition to the list of absentees.

CB Jonathan Jones, CB Cyrus Jones, and SS Nate Ebner were activated off the PUP list but did not yet perform during team drills. (source)

Trey Flowers, Matthew Slater and Kenny Britt also were limited today. (source)

Injuries

Brian Schwenke left the field after receiving medical attention. The heat might have played a part in this. (source)

Offense

The quarterbacks performed as follows during 11-on-11 work: (source)

Tom Brady: 4/7

Brian Hoyer: 13/19

Danny Etling: 19/29, INT

Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and Julian Edelman all received a rather light workload. (source)

Newly acquired Eric Decker was part of Tom Brady’s side session alongside Rob Gronkowski, Chris Hogan, James White, and Phillip Dorsett. (source)

Brady and Riley McCarron connected on a 60-yard pass after the wideout shook rookie cornerback Duke Dawson. (source)

Braxton Berrios was able to make a contested catch over fellow rookie Keion Crossen. (source) Berrios, who had his best practice of the summer, and fellow rookies Danny Etling and Ralph Webb saw plenty of opportunities today. (source)

The entire offense including coaches was forced to run a penalty lap during team drills. (source) Jeremy Hill had to run one on his own after a fumble. (source)

Both Hill and Mike Gillislee saw plenty of reps with the starting offense today. (source)

While the rest of the team was stretching, tight ends coach Nick Caley sent his boys running sprints. (source)

Defense

Dont’a Hightower registered an interception off Danny Etling. On the very next play, Stephon Gilmore came close to picking another pass while in coverage of Braxton Berrios. (source)

J.C. Jackson had another active practice and registered two pass breakups, against Chris Hogan and Riley McCarron. Damarius Travis also broke up two passes, while Ryan Lewis, Stephon Gilmore, Eddie Pleasant, and Eric Rowe each defended one. (source)

Second-year man Jomal Wiltz saw some reps in the slot, playing in a cornerback group together with Gilmore and Rowe. (source)

Special teams

Eric Decker, Rex Burkhead, Riley McCarron, Braxton Berrios, Cyrus Jones, Chris Hogan, Patrick Chung and Julian Edelman all practiced punt returns before the session started. (source)

Miscellaneous

Former Patriots defensive coordinator Al Groh was present for the session. Pat Hill, who also used to work under Bill Belichick at the Cleveland Browns, was also here. (source)
