New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore was named First Team All Pro by the Associated Press on Friday. Gilmore was the only Patriots player named to the First Team.

The Associated Press clearly still needs to work on how they define player positions because there’s a lot of overlap on both the first and second teams.

Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was named First Team flex and Second Team wide receiver. Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt was named First Team defensive end and Second Team defensive tackle. Broncos edge defender Von Miller was named Second Team defensive end and Second Team linebacker. Chargers defensive back Derwin James was named First Team safety and Second Team flex.

They really need to do ranked voting at some of these positions because consistency is important. The AP should just provide the positions of each player and then the flex player or defensive back with the third-most votes should make the First Team and be removed from consideration for Second Team.

Congratulations to Gilmore. Below are the entire First Team and Second Team All Pro rosters.

Voting Quirks

Mahomes (45) and Brees (5) received all the votes at quarterback.

Patriots LG Joe Thuney received two votes for left guard, tied for third place with Rams LG Rodger Saffold and Steelers LG David DeCastro.

Patriots RG Shaq Mason received four votes, which ranks fourth behind Martin, Yanda and...DeCastro?

Patriots ED Trey Flowers did not receive a single vote. That’s terrible.

Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore finished with 26 votes, one fewer than Fuller. Gilmore also received an additional vote for the flex defensive back.

Patriots WR Cordarrelle Patterson was named Second Team kick returner, but he only received 2 votes. Roberts collected 45 and three others received a single vote.

Patriots ST Matthew Slater received four votes for special teamer, good for fifth place. Albert McClellan received one vote.
