glass half empty/half full - Pats 2009 or not

This is a flawed Pats team. Put away your stat book. What do your eyes tell you?

First, on defense, the last time Bill put a good defensive team out there Brushci and Harrison were still playing. Last year's bunch put up the worst defensive performance in Super Bowl history. If Bill is a genius because of his famous Giants game plan, what does last year's result make him?

Just a coach. Which is what he is.

And this year's product is not really an improvement on defense. Unless the playoffs show us otherwise. The team has often shown to be disastrous against the run, and does not have a world class pass rush. Un undrafted rookie starts at one corner.

On offense the team has struggled. Whether the problem is playcalling or an aging QB or aging weapons. It's still a good offense, but is it capable of carrying that bend-but-break defense?

We're hoping things will come together at the last moment. We see the flaws, just as we did in 2009, and we hope it will overcome them. But usually what we see in the reg season translates into the playoffs.

Is there reason for more optimism? Yes! This Pats team has made the Super Bowl 3 out of the last 4 seasons. The o-line is healthy and talented. Gronk and Edelman are healthy if somewhat lessened. There are a lot of weapons.

We have an OC who has been with the team a long time, and this makes a big difference.

Can we go into KC and win? Ah...

But we can beat the Chargers! And hope Andrew Luck has the game of his life!
