The New England Patriots waived Jared Veldheer from the reserve/retired list on Tuesday.
The Green Bay Packers have since been awarded the veteran offensive tackle’s rights, according to the NFL transaction wire.
Veldheer had signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Patriots as the league’s free-agent compensatory formula passed in May. The 32-year-old elected to retire the following week.
Nov. 30 loomed as the deadline for Veldeer to return to play this season.
Green Bay saw starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga exit with a right knee injury last Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers.
Veldheer, originally entering the league as a third-round pick in the 2010 draft out of Hillsdale, has started 113 of his 118 career games through stops with the Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos. The 6-foot-8, 310-pound bookend got the nod in all 12 games he appeared in with Denver in 2018, and projected to serve as New England’s top swing option behind Isaiah Wynn and Marcus Cannon this fall.
The Patriots’ active tackle depth behind Wynn and Cannon includes September signing Marshall Newhouse and August trade acquisition Korey Cunningham.
