Pats Pulpit’s New England Patriots Midseason Awards: Offensive MVP

Who is the Patriots’ premier offensive player through the first half of the season?

The New England Patriots’ season is nine weeks old and the reigning world champions, who are currently 8-1, can finally enjoy a weekend off. This gives us here at Pats Pulpit time to take a look back and analyze the half-season that was — and hand out same awards along the way. Today, the trophy for Offensive Most Valuable Player gets handed out.

Bernd Buchmasser: QB Tom Brady

Julian Edelman has proven throughout the first nine weeks of the season that he is a valuable part of the Patriots’ operation, and certainly deserving of being named Offensive MVP. However, Tom Brady is still the one cog that makes the entire machine run — and he does so despite a changing cast of characters around him, and behind an offensive line that has had considerable ups and downs.

Oliver Thomas: WR Julian Edelman

Edelman stands just 11 receptions away from his abbreviated 2018 regular season, and at age 33, the Super Bowl LIII MVP is on pace for a career-high 112 receptions for 1,178 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s been the intended target on 90 of New England’s 338 pass attempts this fall.

Alec Shane: OG Joe Thuney

In an offense that has been constantly in flux and searching for consistency, Thuney has been the one constant on a battered O-line.

Slot Machine Player: WR Julian Edelman

I’m going Julian Edelman here because he’s getting the majority of defensive attention and is still moving the chains.

Matthew Rewinski: QB Tom Brady

Because I will grind this axe until the point is no longer factually and statistically accurate, Tom Brady’s on pace for another Tom Brady 4500-yard, somewhere-around-30-touchdown season. Shoutout to Ted Karras, though, who started the season filling in for a team captain on short notice and has actually turned into one of PFF’s better-graded centers lately. Not to mention vast improvements snapping the ball.

Pat Lane: WR Julian Edelman

Everyone knows he’s the main option, and yet he’s still on pace for the most receptions and receiving yards of his career.
