Bill Belichick was the happiest guy in the world after the Patriots won the Super Bowl

NFL Films captured Belichick’s excitement perfectly.

Bill Belichick is primarily known for two things: for his stoic persona and for being the best head coach in the NFL — one that added to his impressive résumé on Sunday when his New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53. The game was a tense affair dominated by defense that ultimately ended 13-3 in the Patriots’ favor, with the Rams’ final play securing the Patriots and Belichick their sixth title.

And when looking at NFL Films’ mic’d up clips, it appears as if nobody was happier about the result than Belichick himself. After L.A. missed a field goal with only eight seconds left, he was — especially compared to his usual public demeanor — in a true celebratory mood:

For Belichick, the 2018 season saw plenty of challenges: from the offseason departures of four offensive starters to defensive coordinator Matt Patricia leaving for the Detroit Lions. And while New England was plagued by inconsistency at times during the regular season caused by the change in offensive personnel and a slowly developing defensive chemistry, the team peaked when it had to: in the postseason.

The Patriots beat the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs to set up a date with the Rams in Super Bowl 53. And once again, the team prevailed with Belichick’s comparatively emotional reaction the perfect encapsulation of the season as a whole: New England embraced the underdog mentality right up until the very end, until the team was crowned world champions once again.

Belichick’s reaction is just one of many mic’d up clips coming out, make sure to catch more of them by visiting this 2-minute video by NFL Films or by clicking through the Twitter thread by NFL reporter Dov Kleiman.
