New England Patriots wide receiver Chris Hogan signed a 1-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, per multiple reports. Hogan spent three seasons in New England after starting his career with four seasons for the Buffalo Bills.
Hogan collected 107 receptions for 1,651 yards and 12 touchdowns over his three seasons with the Patriots, and added an impressive 546 yards and 4 touchdowns during the Patriots’ three postseason runs. The Patriots reached the Super Bowl in all three seasons with Hogan, winning two of them.
The Patriots and Hogan decided to go separate ways this offseason, as it was clear that Hogan was no longer as impactful in the offense as he had been in previous years. His production declined each successive season in New England, falling from 1,021 yards and 6 touchdowns over 18 games in 2016, to 608 yards and 7 touchdowns over 12 games in 2017, to 590 yards and 3 touchdowns over 19 games in 2018.
Hogan was an important blocker at receiver and would use his speed down the field to create opportunities for players like Julian Edelman and James White to produce as receivers in the short game.
Best of luck to Hogan in Carolina, and thanks for the three wonderful seasons!
Patriots wide receiver depth chart:
- Julian Edelman
- Phillip Dorsett
- Maurice Harris
- Bruce Ellington
- Braxton Berrios
- Damoun Patterson
Josh Gordon is currently a restricted free agent and is suspended, so he’s not on the depth chart. Berrios is the only receiver under contract beyond 2019.
New England clearly needs to add more talent to the position in the upcoming months, including the draft.
