Examining Chad Reuter's 7 Round Mock

NFL's website released Reuter's 7 round mock draft that you can find, here.

What's interesting is what he has the Patriots doing. In this mock he includes trades, so the Patriots standing at all of their draft positions doesn't happen. But if you don't want to scroll through all of Reuter's picks, here's a shorter version featuring just the Patriots:

Round 1: Traded away to the 49ers...so they could take WR A.J. Brown out of Ole Miss. The Pats would get the #36 pick, and a 2020 3rd. Keep in mind, he has the Raiders taking Drew Lock at #2. Yes, you read that right. Although I could see them trading back if they're targeting someone who isn't worth #32, I could see them trading up for Fant, Hockensen if he drops, or drafting Brown here.

Round 2: Irv Smith Jr, TE, Alabama, Zack Allen, Edge, BC, JoeJuan Williams, CB, Vanderbilt. - He has Ryan Finley going in round 2, he has Sternberger going in between Smith and Allen's selections, and drafting Williams at the end of the 2nd. I disagree with the Williams one, mostly because CB isn't a dire need situation. Two years of 2nd round CB's? Smith or Sternberger? I'd pick Sternberger. He's got the best upside of the non-Iowa TE's. Zack Allen would be an interesting selection as he's probably only this low because of how deep this draft is defensively.

Round 3: Will Grier, QB, West Virginia, Kingsley Keke, DL, Texas A&M, Jamal Davis, Edge, Akron. - Love it. I would love to see this pick happen. This would be a great future for both the Patriots and GrIer. OT Greg Little was selected the pick before this, Miles Boykin lands in Pittsburgh at the top of the 3rd. There was also a run on safeties. Keke met with the Patriots pre-draft and he does fill a need. He's also versatile like Davis. Davis is a small school guy, but his athleticism would fit in with the Patriots. Also look for Deatrich Wise's brother at one of these picks, he may be there later, but he fits alongside his brother. WR's Andy Isabella and Riley Ridley were taken in the middle of these rounds according to the mock.

Round 4: Gary Jennings, WR, West Virginia. I like this pick, he's got great routes, he's got hands, and he's speedy. Plus if they take Grier, it'll be that reconnection that Pittsburgh took with Mason Rudolph and his college receiver James Washington, with Washington contributing now and Rudolph waiting his turn. Most picks in this round don't stand out. But I do like Jennings for the Pats.

Round 5: No picks. But business picks up. Alize Mack goes to Pittsburgh, Tyree Jackson goes to TB, Rypien gets to go to Cincinnati, and an under the radar linebacker in Te'Von Coney from Notre Dame gets selected by the Colts.

Round 6: Jalen Hurd, WR, Baylor. There was a run on the under the radar LB's. Drue Tranquill goes to the Giants, Ben Burr-Kirven goes to Buffalo, Cole Holcomb goes to the Falcons. David Sills V was selected the pick before, also would have matched up with Grier and added a tall, strong receiver.

Round 7: Rodney Anderson, RB, Oklahoma, Terez Hall, LB, Missouri, Saquon Hampton, S, Rutgers, Nick Allegretti, C, Illinois - The only ones I can see sticking on the roster is Hall and Hampton. Hall would probably contribute on special teams and Hampton is a sneaky good safety. Learning from McCourty and Chung wouldn't hurt his development either. Anderson and Allegretti seem more like practice squad options.

Obviously mock drafts don't mean anything. My analysis doesn't either. The success rate of mock drafts is low for a reason. It doesn't attribute anything to whether a team selects someone. I'm a big Grier fan, but doesn't mean that the Patriots are. (I believe they are.) With that being said, we're less than a week away from the draft happening, and until then, take the reports as nothing more than a glorified mock draft analysis
