Scooby Wright III’s preseason glimpse with the New England Patriots could lead to more.
But less than a week after signing, the 25-year-old linebacker was waived ahead of Saturday’s 4 p.m. ET roster deadline, as NESN’s Doug Kyed reported.
Wright originally entered the league as a Cleveland Browns seventh-round draft pick in 2016, after a college career at the University of Arizona that included 163 tackles, 14 sacks, six forced fumbles and unanimous All-American honors as a sophomore.
The 6-foot, 240-pound linebacker later spent parts of two regular seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, appearing in 13 contests, and joined the Alliance of American Football’s Arizona Hotshots this spring.
Wright then agreed to terms with the Patriots last Sunday.
In jersey No. 96, Wright left a quick impression in the August finale versus the New York Giants, starting and finishing with four tackles to go with a pair of sacks.
New England’s late arrival played 49 snaps on defense and 16 snaps on special teams in the process.
