In not even 90 minutes, the New England Patriots will play their second game of the 2019 regular season — their first on the road, and their first against a division rival. While the Miami Dolphins enter the contest as a clear underdog, strange things tend to happen in South Beach so the contest projects to be an entertaining one despite the reigning world champions being expected to win rather comfortably.
Before getting ahead of ourselves, however, let’s take a look at the players on both sides who have been declared inactive and will therefore not participate in tonight’s contest.
Patriots inactives
RB Brandon Bolden
CB Joejuan Williams
RB Damien Harris
WR Jakobi Meyers
OG Jermaine Eluemunor
DE Deatrich Wise Jr.
OT Marcus Cannon
The most noteworthy name on the list of inactive players is starting right tackle Marcus Cannon. The 31-year-old was limited in practice all week long after suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With him being out, the Patriots will now likely turn to either Korey Cunningham or newly signed Marshall Newhouse to serve as Tom Brady’s frontside protector today against Miami.
Also inactive are defensive edge Deatrich Wise Jr. and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers — both of whom saw the field last week against Pittsburgh. Neither of the two was listed on Friday’s final injury report of the week, but they are still out today: while Meyers fell victim to Antonio Brown’s addition to the roster, Wise Jr. appears to be little more than a matchup-specific rotational player at this point in the process.
Brandon Bolden, on the other hand, was already ruled out on Saturday: he was limited in practice with a hamstring injury all week long, and did not travel to Miami with the rest of the team. Despite the veteran being out, third-round rookie running back Damien Harris will not see the first game action of his NFL career — he is a healthy scratch just like he was last week. The rest of the inactive players share the fate of Wise Jr, Meyers and Harris and are out despite being healthy.
The list of inactives also reveals a few things about the players who will suit up today. The biggest names are without a doubt wide receiver Antonio Brown and tight end Matt LaCosse: Brown will make his debut in a Patriots uniform after getting signed as a free last Saturday; LaCosse was the third player listed as ‘questionable’ on Friday besides Cannon and Bolden. That being said, he also was active last week but did not play as he is still rehabbing from an ankle injury suffered during the first week of preseason.
Dolphins inactives
WR Albert Wilson
S Reshad Jones
RB Myles Gaskin
OL Chris Reed
OT Isaiah Prince
OL Bryan Witzmann
LB Trent Harris
While Albert Wilson and Reshad Jones were already declared out on Friday, the rest of Miami’s inactives are mostly depth players. Meanwhile, center Daniel Kilgore, defensive edge Charles Harris and safety Bobby McCain are all active despite being listed as ‘questionable’ on Friday.
