The New England Patriots returned with reinforcements on Wednesday afternoon.
Center David Andrews, nose tackle Beau Allen and linebacker Josh Uche were on hand for practice, opening the 21-day window to be activated from injured reserve. Starting guard Shaq Mason as well as defensive frontmen Byron Cowart and Derek Rivers would also be present and cleared from the Covid-19 reserve list.
But two members of the current active roster did not participate as the San Francisco 49ers near. One has since been placed on IR.
And an additional four Patriots were limited. Rookie safety Kyle Dugger among them.
Here’s the initial injury report leading up to Sunday’s 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.
DID NOT PARTICIPATE
- Patriots: RB James White (not injury related), OT Jermaine Eluemunor (ankle)
- 49ers: RB Raheem Mostert (ankle), OT Trent Williams (ankle), LB Kwon Alexander (ankle), S Jaquiski Tartt (groin)
White, out Wednesday for non-injury reasons, caught eight passes for 65 yards in New England’s 18-12 loss to the Denver Broncos last Sunday. It was a loss that Eluemunor exited only a dozen snaps into after having his ankle caught underneath Patriots quarterback Cam Newton on a sack. He’d go on IR Wednesday. Elsewhere for New England, backup center James Ferentz remains on the Covid-19 list while swing tackle Yodny Cajuste remains on injured reserve. And on physically unable to perform, the same holds true for core special-teamer Brandon King, who missed 2019 due to a torn quad and is eligible now that six weeks of the regular season have passed.
The 49ers practiced without a seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle in Williams, who finished Sunday night’s 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams with an ankle injury. Yet Mostert, diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, did not return to the game for San Francisco. Neither did starting pivot Ben Garland because of a calf strain that has sent him to injured reserve.
LIMITED PARTICIPATION
- Patriots: WR Julian Edelman (knee), G Shaq Mason (calf), DT Adam Butler (shoulder), S Kyle Dugger (ankle)
- 49ers: RB Jeff Wilson (calf), CB Dontae Johnson (groin)
Dugger surfaces on New England’s list of limited with an ankle ailment. The No. 37 overall pick out of Lenoir-Rhyne played 27 snaps on defense and 18 snaps on special teams last Sunday in Foxborough.
San Francisco reconvened for practice with a pair of partial participants. No players graduated to full availability for either side on Wednesday.
