One week to save the season.
That is how many viewed Sunday’s Week 8 game between the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills. New England, sitting at 2-4, had one week to save its season.
It was in their grasp. Quarterback Cam Newton had the football and the Patriots were deep into Buffalo territory late in the fourth quarter, already in range for kicker Nick Folk to possibly tie the contest at 24, and within reach of a game-winning touchdown to turn the season around.
And then, it was gone. The ball was punched out of Newton’s grasp, the Bills recovered the fumble to take over, and the Patriots are left to wonder where to go from here.
And if this was indeed the end.
