The New England Patriots made one move before the NFL trade deadline: they acquired wide receiver Isaiah Ford from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a seventh-round draft choice in 2022. Other than that, however, there were no transactions involving the team. Despite multiple rumors and speculations about the Patriots possibly being “sellers” this year due to their 2-5 records, they did not part ways with the talent on their roster.
Entering the day, the biggest names to watch were cornerback Stephon Gilmore and guard Joe Thuney — two players at comparatively deep positions who appeared to be viable trade chips given their talent and contractual situations. The Patriots obviously valued their contributions differently and decided not to move any of them.
This makes sense for three primary reasons, as pointed out earlier:
1.) The Patriots’ season is very much not over yet
2.) Trading players away would would further destabilize the team
3.) New England should not move players just to make trades
Given all those factors and the fact that no team was apparently willing to meet the Patriots’ asking price for Stephon Gilmore — New England was reportedly asking for a first-round draft pick as well as a player in return for its number one cornerback — today’s comparatively silent trade deadline did not come as a surprise. That said, as noted above, the team did make one move by bringing Isaiah Ford in from the Dolphins.
The trade involving the 24-year-old was one of two made on Tuesday. The other also involved the Dolphins: they sent a sixth-round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs to add running back DeAndre Washington to their backfield.
