The connections between the coaching staffs range from Andre Carter and Shawn Jefferson to Bill Belichick and Mick Lombardi.
But there are more familiar names between the rosters of the 2-5 New England Patriots and 0-8 New York Jets as the divisional meeting at MetLife Stadium nears.
Here’s the current list of ex-Patriots and ex-Jets heading into Monday’s 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff.
NEW YORK
Braxton Berrios, wide receiver – Pick No. 210 overall in the 2018 NFL draft spent his rookie season in New England on injured reserve. Berrios, who received a Super Bowl LIII ring during his stay, would be waived and claimed off waivers by New York the following Labor Day weekend. The 25-year-old receiver and returner from the University of Miami has since appeared in 24 games as a Jet. Those games have brought 29 receptions for 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns on offense, as well as 260 yards on punts and 61 yards on kickoffs.
Chris Hogan, wide receiver – The Jets placed Hogan on injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain midway through October. Prior to then, the product of Penn State lacrosse and Monmouth football had caught 14 passes for 118 yards after agreeing to terms in August. Now 33, Hogan’s circuitous NFL tour has included time with each AFC East team. He won a pair of Super Bowls while with New England from 2016 through 2018, accumulating 141 receptions for 2,193 yards and 16 touchdowns between the regular season and postseason.
Conor McDermott, offensive tackle – The Patriots concluded the 2017 draft having made four selections. In the sixth round, McDermott became the last. The 6-foot-8 UCLA bookend was claimed by the Buffalo Bills following his rookie preseason. And in the midst of 2019, McDermott made his way to East Rutherford via the waiver wire. The 28-year-old has checked into 23 career contests, starting a pair while with the Jets. He’s surpassed the century mark in offensive snaps on the campaign and worked on the field-goal unit.
Harvey Langi, linebacker – Langi garnered $115,000 guaranteed from New England as part of the 2017 undrafted class. The former Brigham Young linebacker secured a 53-man roster spot and made his NFL debut that fall before injuries sustained in a car accident sent him to the non-football injury list. Langi joined the New York practice squad in 2018 and was retained on a futures pact for 2019. The 28-year-old has taken the field for 24 games, including three starts, dating back to then. Langi ranks second on the Jets’ special teams in snaps this season at a clip of 78.9 percent.
NEW ENGLAND
Donte Moncrief, wide receiver – Moncrief, 27, signed to the New England practice squad on Wednesday after beginning the season on New York’s. The 2014 third-rounder out of Ole Miss was released by the Jets at the halfway point in October. Moncrief has caught 204 passes for 2,561 yards and 21 touchdowns through 77 NFL games. The Patriots stand as his sixth organization.
Matt LaCosse, tight end – LaCosse, a Covid-19 opt-out, entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois in 2015. Nameplates in both MetLife Stadium locker rooms followed. The 28-year-old tight end was a New York Giant, then for six days he was a Jet, and then he re-signed with the Giants on the practice squad as his rookie season wore on. LaCosse remained in the fold until 2017. He’d go on to collect a career-high 24 passes the subsequent season with the Denver Broncos and landed in Foxborough on a two-year pact as the 2019 league year opened.
Brandon Copeland, linebacker – The Patriots placed Copeland on injured reserve due to a torn pectoral last week. The 29-year-old linebacker had recorded four starts, 12 tackles and 80 percent of workload in the kicking game prior to undergoing season-ending surgery. And prior to his arrival in New England, Copeland spent two seasons with the Jets. He started a career-high 10 games in 2018 and turned in a career-high five sacks along the way. New York marked the fourth organization on the itinerary for Copeland, a 2013 UDFA out of Penn.
Terrence Brooks, safety – New England signed Brooks to a two-year, $3.25 million deal an offseason ago. Previously, the former Florida State Seminole, Baltimore Raven and Philadelphia Eagle spent 2017 and 2018 with the Jets. Brooks played 684 snaps on special teams during his tenure with New York, and topped the unit over the course of the latter season. Brooks registered 23 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery during that stop. The 28-year-old safety has since registered 41 tackles and one interception for the Patriots. Brooks started his first game since his Jets days last Sunday.
Nick Folk, kicker – After cutting his NFL teeth with the Dallas Cowboys, Folk agreed to terms with the Jets a decade ago. The 2007 Pro Bowler would remain for seven seasons while converting 82.2 percent of his field goals and all but two extra points. Released in February of 2017, Folk went on to sign deals with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Alliance of American Football’s Arizona Hotshots before landing in Foxborough. Now 36, Folk has gone 11-of-13 on field goals and 11-of-12 on extra points this season for the Patriots.
