After mulling retirement before Super Bowl LIII, Patriots safety Devin McCourty decided to return to Foxboro in 2019. Last offseason, the 33-year old resigned with New England on a two-year contract and expects to play through it.
“I’m still enjoying football,” McCourty said while appearing on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show Thursday morning. “I plan on playing next year. Just trying to finish out these two games the best way I can, and then when the offseason hits, evaluate and all that stuff. But still feel pretty healthy and love going out there and competing.”
McCourty has started all 14 games for the Patriots this season, recording two interceptions and 56 total tackles, while also scoring two touchdowns on the season. If the safety starts New England’s final two games, he will have started every regular-season game for the Patriots since 2014.
Last March, McCourty resigned with New England on a two-year, $23 million contract. McCourty will carry an $8 million base salary in 2021 and will cost the Patriots $6.45 million in dead money on their 2022 cap - a side effect of three voided years added to the end of his contract - barring a restructure.
His brother, Jason, will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

After his rookie season in 2010, McCourty was named a Patriots’ team captain and has held that title since. The three-time Super Bowl champion has been a key figure in the Patriots secondary and leader in the locker room throughout his 11-year career.
