The New England Patriots returned to practice without an absence on the active roster.
But as work on the Buffalo Bills got underway Thursday, 20 were listed as limited, including captains in center David Andrews and linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley.
Neither wide receiver Julian Edelman nor defensive tackle Carl Davis were spotted, per the team’s pool report, after both saw their windows to come off injured reserve open last week.
Here’s the initial prognosis ahead of Monday night’s AFC East matchup at Gillette Stadium.
DID NOT PARTICIPATE
- Patriots: no players listed
- Bills: TE Reggie Gilliam (knee/hamstring), OT Ty Nsekhe (groin)
In addition to the designated Edelman and Davis, the Patriots placed former Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore on injured reserve prior to the first practice of Week 16. The 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year reportedly underwent surgery to repair a partially torn quad suffered in New England’s 22-12 loss to the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium.
A pair on the offensive side of the ball were sidelined for Buffalo on Thursday.
LIMITED PARTICIPATION
- Patriots: RB Damien Harris (ankle), RB J.J. Taylor (quadricep), WR Donte Moncrief (thigh), WR Matthew Slater (knee), OT Jermaine Eluemunor (ankle), OT Justin Herron (ankle), G Shaq Mason (calf), C David Andrews (calf), DT Lawrence Guy (shoulder), DT Adam Butler (shoulder), DT Byron Cowart (back), LB John Simon (hamstring), LB Shilique Calhoun (knee), LB Tashawn Bower (ankle), LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (shoulder), LB Anfernee Jennings (shoulder), CB J.C. Jackson (knee), CB Jonathan Jones (neck), K Nick Folk (back), LS Joe Cardona (ankle)
- Bills: QB Jake Fromm (not injury related), WR Andre Roberts (back), OT Daryl Williams (groin), S Jaquan Johnson (ankle)
Andrews and Bentley were among those to exit last Sunday for the Patriots. The visit to Miami Gardens did not include Harris in the backfield or Moncrief on special teams. New England downgraded both from questionable to out less than 24 hours before kickoff because of ankle and thigh injuries, respectively.
A perennial Pro Bowl returner would be limited for the Bills on Thursday. Roberts, who stands with a 29.4-yard average on kickoffs and a 10.4-yard average on punts this campaign, is dealing with a back ailment.
FULL PARTICIPATION
- Patriots: no players listed
- Bills: QB Josh Allen (knee/ankle), WR Stefon Diggs (foot), DE A.J. Epenesa (not injury related), CB Tre’Davious White (neck)
No Patriots graduated from partial to full.
But behind center for the Bills on Thursday, Allen practiced in that capacity. And so did Buffalo’s No. 1 receiver and No. 1 corner. Diggs checks in with 111 receptions for 1,314 yards and five touchdowns on the season. Across the line of scrimmage, White checks in with three interceptions.
