The New England Patriots have finally entered the 2020 NFL draft: with the 23rd overall selection, the team of head coach Bill Belichick decided to... trade down: the Patriots have sent the pick to the Los Angeles Chargers in return for a second-rounder (37th overall) and a third-round selection (71st overall).
While the board fell favorably for the Patriots — there was a run at cornerbacks in the high teens, while a total of five offensive tackless were already drafted when the team was on the clock — New England decided to fill the 63-pick gap between its first-round selection and the follow-up choice, the 87th overall in the third round.
The Patriots now have the following selections to operate with:
Round 1: --
Round 2: 2-37
Round 3: 3-71, 3-87, 3-98, 3-100
Round 4: 4-125, 4-139
Round 5: 5-172
Round 6: 6-195, 6-204, 6-212, 6-213
Round 7: 7-230
According to Rich Hill’s value chart, the Patriots gave away 244.86 points in the trade-down while getting 229.97 in return from the Chargers.
