The New England Patriots entered the draft without a selection in the second round, but a first-round trade-down with the Los Angeles Chargers resulted in them adding pick No. 37 to the equation. And with that 37th overall pick, the Patriots have now... decided to make their first selection of the draft: the team has drafted safety Kyle Dugger out of Lenoir-Rhyne.
A small-school prospect who brings a raw skillset to the table but might need some additional development before being considered a starting-caliber defender, Dugger showed that his athletic foundation is a strong one to build upon at the scouting combine: he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds and also looked terrific in the vertical (42 inches) and broad jumps (134 inches). Dugger is expected to serve in a box/strong safety role for the Patriots and to add some much needed youth to the team’s safety corps.
Following the selection of Dugger, the Patriots’ draft haul and remaining capital now looks as follows:
Round 1: --
Round 2: S Kyle Dugger
Round 3: 3-71, 3-87, 3-98, 3-100
Round 4: 4-125, 4-139
Round 5: 5-172
Round 6: 6-195, 6-204, 6-212, 6-213
Round 7: 7-230
