The New England Patriots focused on the defensive side of the ball early on the second day of this years draft, but double-dipped at the tight end position in the third round: after adding UCLA’s Devin Asiasi with the 91st overall selection, the team brought Virginia Tech’s Dalton Keene on board with the 101st following a trade-up with the New York Jets — one the second deal between the two teams since Bill Belichick joined the Patriots in 2000.
While Asiasi is more of a well-rounded tight end, Keene is an impressive athlete who offers an intriguing mix of versatility and size. As such, he projects to fill the move tight end role at the next level.
The trade itself breaks down as follows:
- New England gets: 3-101
- New York gets: 4-125 + 4-129 + 2021 6th-round pick
Following the selection of Keene, the Patriots’ draft haul and remaining capital now looks as follows:
Round 1: --
Round 2: S Kyle Dugger, LB Josh Uche
Round 3: LB Anfernee Jennings, TE Devin Asiasi, TE Dalton Keene
Round 4: --
Round 5: 5-159
Round 6: 6-195, 6-204, 6-212, 6-213
Round 7: 7-230
